2009 NHL Draft Portraits

I just wanted to pass along the latest interview I was able to land, with Grand Rapids' Tomas Tatar. Tatar was drafted in 2009 and is already looking like a gem, having been able to produce despite being the youngest player in the AHL. Tatar is certainly getting fans excited -- I know personally, I have him ranked as Detroit's top prospect. It's up at Winging it in Motown, so be sure to check that out.
In other news, some sort of mule or donkey will be present at the Wings game tonight. I'm not really sure what's going on, seems to be some kind of gimmick for the fans.

Great job Kyle!

WIM: Were you a Red Wings fan growing up?

TATAR: Yeah, they were my favorite team. I was so excited.

Awesome

TATAR: Almost everybody thinks about me like I’m a sniper. I think if I have a chance, I know I can get a goal, but I think I’m a pretty good passer, too. I think maybe I’m a playmaker, too. I like playing physical, and fighting in the corner.

I recommend deleting anyone posting an ad for their essay service as a 'comment' on your blog. That is the second time they have done this.

The Tomas Tatar interview is very good. He seems to be having a good time with the Griffins, unlike that Axelsson character that went back to his home country. Tatar downplays his readyness for the NHL at this point in his career but he had a great preseason at the Wings training camp.

Did the Plymouth Whalers get screwed by trading to acquire the rights to Tatar? It sounds like he had no intention of ever playing in the OHL because he considered it a step down from his previous league.

The Whalers move was more of a gamble on their part. The import they took, Gabriel Landeskog, was apparently a little hesitant on playing for Plymouth. The Whalers dumped him for a ton of high draft picks and Tomas Tatar. It was a decent risk to take, given that Detroit did like the idea of having Tatar in Plymouth, although with the history between Ilitch and Karmanos it doesn't seem like either was about to do a favor for the other.

Even with Tatar not reporting, Plymouth was lucky to be able to get so many picks for Landeskog. Import players have no obligation to play for the teams that draft them. Landeskog could be making some serious cash playing in the Swedish Elite League right now, and for the next three or four years until he gets to the NHL. Plymouth traded up twice to get him, so it was nice that they were able to get a little bit in return if he really told them he wouldn't play there.
